Nintendo topped Amazon’s list of best sellers in 2021 games list

There are plenty of ways to buy and enjoy games these days, but it’s fair to say that retail giant Amazon is still a great option for many consumers. As a major player in game sales (and sales of almost everything), it’s interesting to see your top players of the year, and in terms of games, the results are intriguing for several reasons.

You can see the regularly updated page here for the US Store, although it will likely remain now. nearly ditto for the rest of the year. The first interesting point is that you don’t see any games up to # 11 in the table, with the top 10 being entirely gift cards and digital store accessories. From a Switch perspective, there’s a $ 10 eShop gift card at number 3, while an officially licensed Mario-themed micro-SD card is at number 8. Other props and cards- Similar giveaways can also be found in graphics, showing that consumers are more than savvy knowing they will need store credit and extensive storage with their system.

Surprisingly – or not, depending on your perspective – the first game is Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury in 11th. It has the advantage of being a notable title with one of the longest times on the market (it was released on February 12), but even so, it is impressive that it has retained other great releases over late in the year. Amazon audiences in the US also love to dance, it seems, with Just Dance 2022 on Switch being the next game in 14th, perhaps helped by its modest price tag.

The key plot point is that all of the other physical games in Amazon’s top 50 in the US are Switch games, the vast majority of which are proprietary Nintendo games; Minecraft and Just Dance 2021 on the system are the third-party exceptions. While it’s tempting to step out of the bunting and celebrate Nintendo’s dominance over one of the world’s largest retailers, context matters as well.

Results like these show that Nintendo’s approach to value in its retail games, especially the relative scarcity and size of discounts in stores or on the eShop, pays off on sites like Amazon. . With many game publishers, the temptation can be to “wait for a rebate,” which invariably occurs within a few months. With Nintendo games, the wait is long, and then the discounts will be small enough that it isn’t always worth the wait. Add to that the enthusiastic Switch fan base and the continued desire for physical copies for many, and you’ve got a significant focus on Switch.

The Sony and Microsoft market segments are very different: above all as downloads on the PSN and Microsoft Xbox stores, and both platform owners continue to emphasize downloads through promotions and even digital-only console versions. Then you consider services like Xbox Game Pass, and it’s easy to see why PlayStation and Xbox have a small number of buyers of physical copies of exclusive games.

This list is also Amazon-only and broken down by platform, though it’s still quite surprising that cross-platform heavy hitters like FIFA 2022 and all kinds of shooters / other sports games aren’t featured.

However, as an indicator of Nintendo’s current model of maintaining value and physical editions, the Amazon chart is interesting.

And yes, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild are still selling well after almost five years.
