The best Nintendo Switch games to play, according to us

What’s your favorite Nintendo Switch game? For us, we rate these five games pretty high as some of the best Nintendo Switch games.

Personally, I treated the Nintendo Switch like an indie machine for a while, trying to buy indie games on the machine so I could deal with them casually. That being said, there are a whole bunch of AAA or first-party Nintendo games out there that are absolutely worth playing.

If you’ve got a new Switch but aren’t sure where to start, here are our picks for the best Nintendo Switch games to start with.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

While the original Mario Kart 8 was released on the Wii U, it really came into its own on the Nintendo Switch, with a much higher player base and a slew of additional content.

Mario Kart 8 is one of the best casual and party games you can get on the handheld console, allowing up to four local players with the Switch’s unique split-controller scheme. You can play at your own pace, compete against other players online, and play as characters from the Mario franchise in this fairly easy-to-learn racing game.

Additionally, Nintendo has announced that it will support Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on the switch with a host of new maps via DLCavailable for purchase in one big transaction or as part of the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pass.

Nintendo Switch Sports

Released in April 2022, Nintendo Switch Sports is a kind of sequel to the very popular Sports Wii game, in which you use the console’s motion controls to play sports against AIs, your friends, or online against other players.

It’s incredibly fun, with volleyball, tennis, soccer and a few other great sports to play with motion controls. Although it was released quite late in the Nintendo Switch life cycle, we believe Nintendo Switch Sports is about as essential as gaming on Switch can get.

To the east

To the east is an RPG about two travelers named John and Sam who venture To the east to uncover the mysteries of the near future world in which they live. It’s a bit apocalyptic, but it’s wrapped up in a beautiful art style.

Although it is available on other platforms, it is the perfect game to play on Switch. Its beautiful 2D art style and top-down perspective make it an ideal game to play on the go. Its story is gripping too, as the two travelers attempt to brave a world on the brink of collapse.

To the east is available on Nintendo Switch, Steam, GOG and the Humble Store.

pokemon unite

pokemon unite is a MOBA (Massively Online Battle Arena, like DOTA 2 or League of Legends) in which you play as a Pokémon with a team of other players against an enemy team of players. If you’re new to Pokémon, this is a great way to get into the franchise. If you love Pokémon but have never played a MOBA, this is something new to try.

Unlike many games in the MOBA genre, pokemon unite is surprisingly easy to play and quite accessible. It’s free and easy to understand, with simple controls and mechanics. The game will be receiving updates for the foreseeable future, with new playable Pokémon being added from time to time.

pokemon unite is available on the Nintendo Switch, Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land

The last game on our list is Kirby and the Forgotten Land, a pretty casual platformer starring everyone’s favorite pink orb as he travels through an abandoned town to save his friends.

It’s really a basic game that offers little explanation. You play as a sentient, lovable, pink ball of cuteness called Kirby who travels through a city, battling bad guys and gobbling them up. Swallow them? Yeah, he literally sucks them in with his mouth and absorbs their powers.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land is available on the Nintendo Switch.

Now that you know the best games, should you buy a Nintendo Switch?

If you love playing any title, a Nintendo Switch is a pretty safe gadget to pick up. It’s a powerful handheld with the fun gimmick of being able to switch between TV mode (like a normal console) and handheld mode (like a Gameboy). It is easy to use and has lots of fun games.

Often on sale, the original Nintendo Switch sells for around $470while the stripped-down, handled-only Nintendo Switch Lite sells for around $330. Alternatively, the Nintendo Switch OLED Edition is available now, retailing for around $540.
